‘Digging Exeter’ with RAMM

Dig into our story like you’ve never done before… literally!

We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary here at Guildhall Shopping Exeter, and we’re inviting you to delve into the city’s incredible past.

Join us here in Market Square on Saturday 18th April from 11am – 4pm and put your excavation skills to the test in one of our giant dig pits, littered with artefacts just waiting to be uncovered.

From pot sherds and statues to dinner plates, turkey bones and leather boots, everything archaeologists have discovered over the years helps piece together the mosaic of Exeter’s history (and yes — they’ve even found one or two mosaics too!).

While we may look like part of a modern city today, just beneath your feet there are centuries of stories waiting to be told. From the earth-shattering dramas of Roman Isca Dumnoniorum, Viking invasions and Civil War sieges, to the everyday lives of shepherds driving their flocks to market, Tudor traders selling their wares, and Victorian nobles hosting elegant dinner parties.

Alongside our excavation pits, you’ll also find handling tables to explore, puzzles to solve, fascinating information on objects in RAMM’s collection, and professional archaeologists ready to chat about the remarkable discoveries that continue to shape Exeter’s story.

So come along, grab a trowel, and dig in with us!
